Meeting With Your Financial Advisor For The First Time
You've chosen a financial advisor and scheduled your first meeting-now what? Prepare to discuss your financial position and goals and provide basic documents.
What to Ask Your Financial Advisor:
During the first sit-down with your advisor, think about finding out the following so you know what to expect going forward:
- How are they compensated? Fees or Commissions?
- Where do they obtain information regarding investments?
- Do they work solo or as part of a team that may provide support?
- How do they determine investment recommendations?
- What are the advisor’s investment philosophy and qualifications?
- Are taxes considered when creating my investment strategy?
Please note that Huntington advisors aren't able to provide tax or legal advice.
What to Discuss Annually with Your Financial Advisor
- Income
- Risk tolerance
- General assets
- Retirement plans
- Financial priorities
- Insurance coverage
- Specific short- and long-term goals
- Dependents, beneficiaries, and any immediate or extended family members
- Annual spending, including college debt, vehicles, real estate, travel plans
After the Meeting
After you and your advisor know more about each other, the next steps might depend on what was achieved. Do you need to provide more information? Did you get a financial roadmap? Do you have follow-up questions?
Before leaving, discuss when you might meet again. Face-to-face is always good, but after the first meeting, subsequent meetings may be virtual, but that is up to you and your advisor.
If you've established a meeting schedule, stick to it–don't get complacent. And if you did receive a financial roadmap make sure to inform your advisor of changes to income, debt, major life events or simply to maintain contact.
