A routing number is a unique, nine-digit number that functions like an address for your bank. It’s used for electronic transactions such as funds transfers, ACH transfers, direct deposits, wire transfers (including Fedwire), digital checks and bill payments. Routing numbers are also known as ABA routing numbers (named for the American Bankers Association, which created the system in 1910), ABA numbers, or routing transit numbers (RTN).
If you’re looking at a paper check, your routing number appears at the bottom left and is surrounded by special symbols (⑆). These symbols help check-processing systems read the number; they’re not part of the routing number itself.
